Thomas Schumann invests in water equities to advance a water-secure world. He is the creator of Water Security Index, which assesses water risk for publicly-traded securities.
Schumann’s interest in water started in 2011 while pursuing the relaunch of Trinity Water, a distressed, premium bottled water asset in the Trinity Mountains, Idaho. Inspired by the severe California drought in 2015 he launched a virtual water cluster, to further the connection, collaboration and communication of water technology companies, investors, corporates, academia, utilities and NGOs. Watercluster.com served as a platform to advance water security in California and the U.S.
Deeply immersed in the domestic and international water space he then helped in 2016 water technology companies and two large desalination projects in Monterey, California with their financing activities to bring needed new water supply, filtration and desalination technologies to market.
Schumann has also served as Vice President for First Federal Bank of California, where he contributed 10% in new loans and deposits to the bank’s new $120 million portfolio in the first year post launch. He also co-founded German Tobacco Group AG, which launched a new international value cigarette brand while successfully overcoming the barriers of entry into the monopolized $420 billion global tobacco industry. This led him to discover his true passion for water security, and social and environmental impact and financial out-performance.
Born in 1964 in Germany’s financial capital, Frankfurt am Main to a Sudanese father and a German mother, Schumann completed his German Abitur, then served as a Private First Class in the German Air Force, before becoming an international flight attendant with Lufthansa German Airlines.
While traveling the globe on Boeing 747 and Airbus A300 aircraft, he started his first business, pioneering a $100 million market in Germany for recycled Levi’s 501 jeans from California. Monthly commutes between Frankfurt and Los Angeles led to his 1996 U.S. immigration; he currently lives and works in Santa Monica, one of America’s most environmentally responsible, sustainable, water conscious cities.
Schumann loves trail running in the Santa Monica Mountains, travel, making meaningful connections with people, and acting as an agent of positive, global change. He has been an accomplished endurance athlete for 35 years, is currently a Top 10 ranked U.S. Masters long-distance runner and embraces excellence, integrity and performance.
Schumann's business philosophy values "People, Planet and Profit", in exactly that order.
